McLean – Kathleen Murphy, the Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates in the 34th District of McLean released the following statement on the signing of the Transportation Bill today.

“Today Governor McDonnell will sign the bi-partisan transportation compromise that will bring millions of dollars of new transportation funds back to Northern Virginia. This bill, while not perfect, is a major step toward keeping our 21st century economy strong and will bring relief to families and small businesses across Virginia. Transportation improvements should be the top priority for our leaders and I believe that voters will remember the politicians who opposed this bi-partisan deal.”

Today we celebrate our mothers. These wonderful women deserve our respect and appreciation for all they have done and continue to do for us.

I am the lucky daughter of a great mom who was an inspiration to me. She raised seven children, taught us to respect each other and to reach out to help others in need. She stood strong when my father was deployed and held us together when my brother was killed by a robber. Last year, she was diagnosed with cancer and died in July. Her courage and strength during that difficult time remind me to say thank you for everyday.

I am so grateful that I had a loving mother and I celebrate her memory on this Mother’s Day.

I am the mother of three daughters, two step-daughters and three granddaughters. Mother’s Day should remind all of us how important it is to support the issues vital to women: equal pay, preventing violence against women, and protecting women’s access to prescriptive medications and health care.

We are pleased to announce that Democracy For America has endorsed Kathleen’s Campaign for Delegate. Check out the story on Blue Virginia here:

Democracy for America’s ”Purple to Blue Project” has announced its third Virginia endorsement of 2013. Along with its support for Jennifer Boysko (running against Tom Rust in the 86th House of Delegates district) and John Bell (running against David Ramadan in the 87th district), DFA (which has 21,000 members in Virginia and 1 million members nationwide) has now thrown its weight behind Kathleen Murphy (running against the egregious Barbara Comstock in the 34th district).

According to its press release, DFA plans to spend well over $750,000 on its five “Purple to Blue” targeted Virginia delegate races this year. It also says it plans a “robust layered campaign that is highly data-driven and micro targeted,” the goal of which is “firing up volunteer boots on the ground,” as well as “run[ning] a tightly targeted paid field, mail and media program in its five targeted races.”

Also of interest, DFA released polling by Public Policy Polling in the three “Purple to Blue” races it has endorsed thus far (VA-86, VA-87 and VA-34). A few interesting findings are:

*Ken Cuccinelli is wildly unpopular in the 34th and 86th, also not particularly strong in the 87th.
*The Virginia General Assembly has a negative favorable/unfavorable rating in all three districts.
*The Tea Party is viewed very negatively in the 34th and 86th districts, about evenly favorable/unfavorable in the 87th district.
*PPP writes that “voters in the 34th, 86th
and 87th districts are clearly ready for a change in Virginia’s lower house - only 31%, 30% and 32% of each respective district currently has a favorable view of VA state legislature.”

Nick Passanante, “Purple to Blue” Project Director, adds that “voters in our Purple to Blue targeted delegate districts are sick and tired of the tea party extremism they see coming out of Richmond and hungry for change,” and also that “we’re confident our Purple to Blue endorsed candidates have what it takes to tie Ken Cucinelli’s radical, right-wing agenda to their opponents and beat them decisively in November.”

Finally, DFA Chair Jim Dean says (correctly) that “Delegate Barbara Comstock is one of the most virulently anti-choice members of the VA House of Delegates and radically out of step with mainstream Virginia.” He adds that DFA is “incredibly proud to support Kathleen Murphy and…look[s] forward to providing her with the resources and boots on the ground to beat Comstock and bring common sense progressive values back to Richmond.”

Great stuff, thanks to DFA for helping out in the key swing state of Virginia! Now, let’s focus on doing what we need to in order to win these races and elect these three excellent Democrats in November!

By William Callahan

The money race for 34th District in Virginia’s House of Delegates has begun, and Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock is ahead of Democratic challenger Kathleen Murphy.

But Murphy raised more in the first quarter of 2013, according to campaign finance reports available through the Virginia Public Access Project.

The two candidates have less than seven months left to campaign for the 34th District seat ahead of the Nov. 5 election, which also includes Virginia’s governor and lieutenant governor races and all seats in the Virginia House of Delegates.

The 34th District Great Falls and parts of Tysons, Vienna, McLean and Loudoun County.

Murphy began the year with a balance of $0 and raised $127,256 through March 31

Comstock began the year with a balance of $118,376 and has raised another $104,000 through March 31.

Murphy and Comstock reported first quarter expenses of $21,971 and $40,168, respectively.

After expenses, Comstock’s camp has an ending balance of $182,311, while Murphy’s has $105,284.

Murphy, a mother of four and Fairfax County resident for more than 20 years, says her fast-rising donations come from supporters, including February donations of $10,000, $15,000 and $20,000.

“I am gratified to have such a deep base of support to start this campaign,” Murphy said in a statement Monday. “As I talk to business and community leaders across our district, it is clear they want common sense solutions on the important issues for our community, especially transportation and education and I am honored to have their support.”

Murphy, the president of Johnson Murphy and Associates, served in the administration of former President Bill Clinton as a senior advisor for international trade issues at the Department of Commerce. Murphy also serves on the Human Services Council and the Health Care Task Force for Fairfax County.

Comstock was elected in November 2009. During the 2013 session, she successfully passed a bill requiring doctors to tell patients undergoing Lyme Disease tests about problems with testing reliability. Read more about the bill, HB 1933, right here. She also pushed a number of education initiatives.

Spring Canvass Kickoff

This weekend we kicked off our Spring Canvass Season in McLean with over 35 supporters on a beautiful Saturday morning. We were joined by former delegate Margi Vanderhye and former candidate for Congress Jeff Barnett who spoke to the crowd about the importance of talking to our friends and neighbors about this election. Murphy submitted more than three times the signatures necessary to qualify for the ballot.

“I’m encouraged by the tremendous outpouring of support from concerned Northern Virginia voters,” said Murphy. “I have knocked on hundreds of doors in the 34th District and it is clear voters in our District want a leader who will represent our families instead of standing for divisive and extreme political positions.”

Murphy is a strategic consultant who has long been active in Democratic politics. She served as senior advisor for international trade issues at the Department of Commerce and handled Congressional affairs at USAID during the Clinton administration. Previously, she worked for Rep. Charlie Wilson (D-TX) where she handled defense and foreign operations appropriations and held a top-secret security clearance. She helped found Salute Our Services, an organization to connect the families of deployed service members, and Kids Serve Too, an organization to honor and support children of military families.

Murphy, an American University graduate, is a member of Fairfax County’s Human Services Council, the McLean Community Foundation, the Fairfax County Health Care Task Force and serves on the fundraising board of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Murphy, the mother of four, is married to attorney Bill Sudow and lives in McLean, Va.

Virginia’s 34th District encompasses portions of Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, stretching from McLean at the Arlington County line to Sterling. The district includes all of Great Falls and portions of McLean, Vienna, Potomac Falls and Sterling.

Long active in public service, Kathleen Murphy was informed by her family early on as to what party affiliation she would have.

“I had a grandmother who told me when I was about 5 years old, ‘I want you to remember one thing: You were born a Democrat and you will die a Democrat,’” she said. “I believed her, even though I didn’t know what a Democrat was.”

Murphy in January kicked off her campaign to run against Del. Barbara Comstock (R-34th) in the Nov. 5 election.

“I don’t believe that we are being represented in the House of Delegates,” she said. “I believe that our current delegate doesn’t represent the real priorities, values or interests of people of this district. I think that she’s representing somewhere else, but not here.”

Murphy is unhappy with Comstock’s support of legislation that requires women undergo trans-vaginal ultrasounds before having abortions.

“I don’t think the General Assembly needs to be making decisions for women,” Murphy said. “I don’t think they need to be in our bedrooms at all, and I don’t think they need to be making laws that will women’s access to prescription medications.”

Murphy called the statewide transportation bill recently passed by the General Assembly a “good first step” and disagreed with Comstock’s nay vote on the legislation.

“My question is, did she vote against it because of [anti-tax activist] Grover Norquist or because of actual objections that she had to the bill?” Murphy said.

Murphy dislikes the bill’s higher tax on hybrid cars, as those vehicle owners are trying to do right by the environment, and opposes using general-fund moneys for transportation.

“I would like them to stop raiding education and health funds for transportation and other things as well,” she said. “I think education should be put first on our list because our kids need to be ready for the 21st century global economy.”

Murphy favors universal background checks for firearms purchasers, but not measures that would infringe on lawful ownership of such weapons. Her reason is personal: Her brother, who had five children, was shot to death by a robber in Arizona 10 years ago.

Despite this, she favors Second Amendment rights and notes her brother was a lifelong firearm owner and her father was a hunter.

Murphy is president of the consulting firm Johnson Murphy & Associates and formerly worked in the Clinton administration, serving as a senior adviser on international trade issues at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

She also worked in congressional affairs with the U.S. Agency for International Development and handled House Defense Appropriations Committee issues for U.S. Rep. Charles Wilson.

This is her first attempt at seeking public office, but she has worked on many other campaigns, including serving as deputy director for women’s outreach at the Democratic National Convention for Al Gore’s presidential campaign in 2000.

Murphy was born in Illinois, but moved around frequently as a military child. She earned a degree magna cum laude in liberal arts from American University and moved to the Washington, D.C., area after marrying her first husband, former U.S. Rep. Jack Murphy (D-N.Y.).

Murphy in 2004 married William Sudow. They live in McLean and have a total of six children from previous marriages.

Candidates in the 34th District likely will have to raise about $1 million each, said Murphy, who will file her first campaign-finance report March 31.

“I’m really committed to the people of this district,” she said. “I want to win so they will have real representation in the House of Delegates. I’m determined to win.”

Democrat Pamela Danner, who unsuccessfully challenged Comstock in 2011, said the Republican incumbent is out of touch with her district’s values. Murphy has an excellent background and “more closely represents the constituency,” Danner said.

Former Del. Margaret Vanderhye (D-34th), whom Comstock defeated in 2009, said Murphy would do a better job of representing the district.

“This is not a socially reactionary area,” Vanderhye said. “In McLean, we’ll have a big turnout. They’ll look for someone to represent their priorities. It’s a results-driven constituency. They want problems solved.”

Comstock’s campaign manager, Susan Falconer, issued a statement saying the delegate has been a “tireless advocate” for the district. Comstock helped reverse $120 million in proposed cuts for public education, promoted a multitude of employment-related bills and fought against human trafficking and Lyme disease, Falconer said.

“Barbara has earned the bipartisan support of business, community and philanthropic leaders with her record of fighting for our priorities and delivering common-sense results,” Falconer said.

“I am proud to receive this important endorsement from EMILY’s List. They are an important voice for women across the country,” said Kathleen Murphy. “As Delegate for the 34th District, I will be active in the fight for women’s rights. Virginia voters deserve a representative who protects the rights of women and families.”

Murphy announced the endorsement Wednesday at a Women’s Event in McLean.

EMILY’s List helped elect an historic number of candidates in the 2011-2012 election cycle –the only pro-choice Democratic woman governor in the country, 19 new women to the House, six Senate incumbents, and three new Senators. EMILY’s List raised a record-breaking $52 million last year, the largest amount in the group’s 28-year history.

The two million-member EMILY’s List is one of the nation’s largest political action committees. Since it’s founding in 1985, EMILY’s List has worked to elect 100 pro-choice Democratic women to the House, 19 to the Senate, 10 governors and over 500 women to state and local office.

Yesterday, Wednesday the 20th, we had a very energetic group at the home of Judith Mueller for a meet and greet in McLean. The group of nearly 30 local residents discussed the importance of women’s health issues, and how these issues are going to be a center piece of this campaign. Having a very engaged and organized women’s group is going to be vital to our success in November. A big thank you to former Chairwoman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Kate Hanley, and current Dranesville Supervisor John Foust for joining us and speaking to the group. Sign up with the campaign to get more information about future events in your area and head on over to our Facebook page to see more photos!
